December 5 Advent Devotion – Do Not Put Your Trust in Princes!

Christmas Under Construction – Devotions for Your Advent Season

Psalm 146: 3-10

How often do we complain “somebody should do something about that!” We expect others – political leaders, the government, or public citizens – to remedy any issue we don’t like.

Psalm 146 reminds us to first Praise GOD, because there is no help in princes and mortals. Earthly leaders – kings, princesses, presidents, CEOs, governors, senators – are inadequate saviors who only provide us false hope. Princes on earth ultimately disappoint and cannot deliver (146:3). We see this everywhere today – there are many talkers, but few real doers who get the job done. The psalmist’s message down through the generations is mortals TALK, but God DOES.

The last five Psalms, 146-150, tell us to offer a heartfelt “Praise the Lord!” every day. We offer praise to the One who is the hope and help of the needy, the poor, and the afflicted. But what of our Kirk of Kildaire congregation? Kirk members are blessed to live in one of the richest places in North Carolina. We watch with eager anticipation in December 2017 as a contractor team uses brick, concrete and metal to complete a bright new classroom building, ready in 2018 to bless our church family. This Advent, let’s remember that Americans are in the top 2% of world population wealth. Compared to 98% of humanity, most of our problems in this life are not major – we only have minor challenges.

Holiday financial stress in our homes? Construction issues and delays to complete our new Kirk building? Let us sing praises to our God! The Lord will lift up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous (146:8). Our God does not ignore physical, social, and spiritual pains of those who praise him – he attends to the needs of all grateful people. Jesus came to earth to affirm His concern for the least among us. God, not princes, not the government, is the hope of the needy. And we mortals – the doers of his word – are God’s instruments of help here on earth!

5 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, 6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; 7 who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. 10 Praise the Lord!
